Shaft isn’t the only classic blaxploitation film set to receive a modern take. Warner Bros. plans to bring back Cleopatra Jones for today’s film audience. The original movie was released in 1973 and starred Tamara Dobson as an undercover government agent whose day job as a supermodel, served as the perfect cover for her real work. Warner Bros. has hired Misha Green (WGN’s Underground) to write and produce the film. When it was originally released, Cleopatra Jones drew comparisons to James Bond with the character’s fighting prowess and weapon equipped automobile. This new take on Cleopatra Jones plans to lean in that direction and has me very intrigued.
There aren’t a lot of roles for women in Hollywood, let alone black women that fit that mold. Now the real interesting news will be who they cast in the main role.
