The 2017 Cleveland Indians are doing something that is rare in baseball. The Indians as of press time has won 20 consecutive games. Let that sink in 20 consecutive games. The fact that we are talking about baseball when the first week of the NFL is complete and college football season is 2 weeks old says a lot. In 2002 Oakland A’s under General Manager Billy Beane (who was played by Brad Pitt in the movie “Money Ball” won 20 consecutive games. So it has been done, however no one remembers the 2002 A’s.The era was different, this was before social media. The Indians are 10 months removed from a historic Game Series loss vs the Chicago Cubs. The Indians streak is historic considering the fact they have outscored their opponents by over 100 runs during the streak. It’s not just offense they are also shutting out opponents this season. As of press time the Indians lead the majors with 19 shutouts. For those unaware of baseball this means 19 times this season Indians opponents have failed to score a single run in a game against the Indians. The players may not have crossover appeal like the Indians of old (Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton, Manny Ramirez). The casual fan has never heard of Francisco Lindor and Corey Kluber but these are among 2 notable all stars on the team. The streak may be historic and may be just a bottomline stay to some but there is no reason to doubt the 2017 Cleveland Indians won’t break the 1916 New York baseball Giants record of 26 game win streak.
