UFC 217 becomes an even more stacked card with the recent announcement of a 3rd title fight set for the November PPV. Strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk revealed on Fox Sports she will be defending her belt against Rose Namajunas on Nov. 4th at Madison Square Garden.
The title fight joins already announced title bouts between Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre and Cody Garbrandt vs T.J. Dillashaw, setting up UFC 217 to be one of the biggest events of the year for the company. Joanna Jedrzejczyk sports a 14-0 undefeated record in MMA. She’s defended her championship 5 times and if she is able to defeat Rose Namajunas at UFC 217, she will tie Ronda Rousey’s record for 6 title defenses inside the UFC Octagon by a female combatant.
This will be Rose’s second crack at UFC Strawweight gold after falling to Carla Esparza in the TUF 20 Finale. Since then Rose Namajunas has gone 4-1, with her only loss being a split-decision to former title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz. “Thug Rose” is coming off a very impressive stoppage of Michelle Waterson making her a prime candidate to fight Joanna. Along with the fact, she is one of the few top SW fighters who hasn’t already tasted defeat at the hands of the champion.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk should be the rightful favorite come fight night and I would pick her to retain her championship. Yet, Rose is still a very young fighter who is constantly improving and I look forward to seeing what should be an exciting match-up on paper.
