Welcome to the Summerslam 2017 recap where I will break down every match and give my personal grade along with the winner of each match.
Kickoff Show Quick Results
The Miztourage def. Jason Jordan & The Hardy Boyz after The Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale on Jordan (Grade: C)
Neville def. Akira Tozawa (c) to win the Cruiserweight Championship after a Red Arrow on the back of Tozawa (Grade: C)
The Usos def. The New Day (c) to win the Smackdown Tag Team Championship after a Double Superfly Splash on Big E (Grade: B+)
Baron Corbin vs. John Cena
Pretty decent match to kick off Summerslam. Not a good week for failed Money in the Bank winner Baron Corbin as he fell short to Big Match Jawn after an Attitude Adjustment breaking his Summerslam losing streak. It was an okay match, nothing big. Honestly Corbin needed this win especially against such a big opponent like John Cena. I think WWE is punishing Corbin for his recent Twitter actions. I’m giving this match a C (okay).
Naomi (c) vs. Natalya for the Smackdown Women’s Championship
Surprisingly great match between these two women. Nothing special but enjoyable for most viewers. Natalya gave Summerslam another iconic Hart family moment when she made Naomi tap out to the Sharpshooter after avoiding a Split-Legged Moonsault. To become the NEW Smackdown Women’s Champion! Nice match between these two women nonetheless. It was too early for Carmella to cash in her contract especially after Corbin’s disaster on Smackdown Live recently. I’m giving this match a B (great).
Big Cass vs. Big Show with Enzo Amore in a Shark Cage above the ring
Not a good match which isn’t a surprise. Two big men who don’t usually put on good matches in the same ring isn’t good and this match should’ve been on kickoff show and replaced by Usos vs. New Day. The only highlight of the match was Enzo Amore escaping the the shark cage and getting hit by a Big Boot by Big Cass before he hit a Big Boot on Big Show (damn that’s a lot of BIG) before finishing off the boring match with an Empire Elbow. I give this match a D+ (boring).
Randy Orton vs. Rusev
If you blinked, you missed this match. Rusev attacked Orton before the match started and when the official gets the short brawl under control. Orton hits an RKO outta nowhere on the Bulgarian Brute. That match was 10 F***ING SECONDS. Worst match of the night hands down and definitely not the way to handle such a great heel like Rusev. This match was an F (disaster).
Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Sasha Banks for the Raw Women’s Championship
Another great women’s match. These two women gave the fans a good match. The match ended when Sasha Banks (who weared a unique peacock attire) made Alexa Bliss submit to the Bank Statement to become the NEW Raw Women’s Champion! As a personal fan of Alexa Bliss, I’m upset but congrats to Sasha Banks winning the match. I’ll give this match a B (great).
“Demon” Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt
Fun decent match between this two. Both men needed the win but Balor came out the victor after a turnbuckle dropkick followed by the Coup de Grace! Nice match and loved seeing Finn Balor unleash the demon persona. I like how WWE makes the demon gimmick special. I’m giving this match a B (great).
Sheamus & Cesaro (c) vs. Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins
What a goddamn match between both teams. There was mixture of everything in this match! Uppercuts, Springboards,Splashes, Hurricanranas, Slams, and even Cesaro tearing up the beach ball! Great heel work by Cesaro and Sheamus and amazing reunion teamwork by ⅔ of the Shield. Ambrose and Rollins came up the the winners and becoming NEW Raw Tag Team Champions after Rollins hit a high knee on Sheamus followed by the Dirty Deeds by Ambrose for the big feel good win. Definitely a memorable Summerslam moment. I’m giving this great tag match an A- (amazing!)
Fun Fact: Dean Ambrose is now a Grand Slam Champion
AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens for the United States Championship with Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon as Special Guest Referee
Fun match between these two great wrestlers but these two sadly didn’t give the match all they have got in them. Still, this match was great and seeing Shane get in altercations with both men, it definitely put me on the edge of my seat and wondering if Shane would turn heel and attack one of them. The match ended with Styles retaining the United States Championship after Owens was arguing with Shane saying a Pop-Up Powerbomb was a three count which caused Styles to hit the Phenomenal Forearm followed by the Styles Clash for the win and first retain of the night! Hopefully we see a Shane vs. Owens feud in the future. I’ll give this match a B (great).
Jinder Mahal (c) w/The Singh Brothers vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship
Pretty slow match for the Smackdown Main Event. I personally wasn’t impressed by this match. Another decent Jinder Mahal match. Shinsuke hasn’t really had a good match with anyone except Cena and the MITB Ladder Match. Nakamura needs to feud with someone he would have amazing matches with like Sami Zayn or AJ Styles. A distraction from the SIngh Brothers cost Nakamura the world title when the Maharaja hit the Khallas, taking advantage of the Singh Brothers and retained the WWE Championship for Indian. C+ (okay).
Brock Lesnar (c) w/Paul Heyman vs. Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe for the Universal Championship
Match of the freakin’ Night hands down! These four monsters gave it all they got in this WrestleMania worthy match. Braun Strowman dominated Lesnar putting him on a goddamn stretcher after hitting a Powerslam through two broadcast tables at ringside before using the last one to trap the beast before officials helped to to the back! The steel steps were used as weapons by Braun and Reigns and even the chair that Strowman threw on Reigns recently on Raw was used again when he threw it at Joe and Reigns. Strowman was cut open on the side of his head after a steel step shot by Reigns. Lesnar returned mid way the match sending the three men to Suplex City before he hit an F-5 on Roman “freakin” Reigns, retaining the Universal Title and staying in the WWE. I’m giving this match a A (amazing).
That was the Summerslam 2017 Recap! Overall Grade: B (great)
