Disney has found great success transforming its animated classics to live action film adaptations. Beauty and the Beast currently stands as the #1 movie of 2017 with over $500 million at the domestic box office. The Lion King is another beloved Disney classic set for a live action take and the reimagining may have found its villain. THR reports Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to voice the character of Scar.
If Ejiofor does take the part, he would join Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa, alongside a star studded cast that also includes Seth Rogen, John Oliver, and Billy Eichner. Jon Favreau is directing after previously helming Disney’s successful live action remake of The Jungle Book. I think Chiwetel Ejiofor is a great actor. Jeremy Iron’s role as Scar is iconic and perhaps my favorite Disney villain, so Ejiofor would certainly have some big shoes or paws to fills in this case.
What I like so much about Ejiofor as an actor is his versatility. Look no further than his roles in Four Brothers and Serenity. In both films, he portrays the villain but in Serenity he is an icy, cold, detached killer while in Four Brothers he is a loud, arrogant and flashy gangster. Both characters carry themselves completely differently, but each one leaves a lasting impression and elevates the film when they are on screen. If Chiwetel Ejiofor does wind up taking the part, I’m confident he will live up to the role.
