SmackDown Recap 4/2/17

Written by: The Immortal KB

SmackDown took place at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, USA approximately sixteen thousand were in attendance.

The show began with video from earlier in the day of Jinder “Hard Body” Mahal was in the middle of a photoshoot with the WWE Championship when Shane McMahon takes back the belt, saying those are earned here on Smackdown Live and that Mahal will face Sami Zayn later in the evening.

After the brief video Shane McMahon enters the ring to welcome the newest member of the SmackDown roster the United States Champion Chris Jericho. He makes his way to the ring and christens SmackDown as the new show of Chris Jericho “Smack it down, Maaaaaan”! Shane tells him that the main event of the evening will be the re-rematch of Kevin Owens vs Chris Jericho for the United States Championship. AJ Styles comes to the ring, reminds Jericho of his betrayal of Y2AJ, and that he’s “standing in the house that AJ Styles built”.Jericho threatens to put AJ on the list for thinking he won’t win later in the evening. In comes the “Face of America” Kevin Owens, a brawl breaks out between him and AJ.

The Jinder Mahal vs Sami Zayn match starts its close to around 11 minutes. No appearance of Baron Corbin who was suspended for a week for harming a ref on Talking Smack.Mahal wins via pinfall when a Singh brother grabs Zayn’s feet to set up the Cobra Clutch Slam. Mahal is starting to feel like a legit contender, plus he’s not even thirty two yet.

A segment with the “Welcoming Committee” and Becky Lynch being neutral to what happened last week.

A video package of The King of Strong Style Shinsuke Nakamura is played announcing his first match on the main roster will be at WWE Backlash. Ziggler tries to violate Swagamura by talking about him. Ziggler is a wrestler most are just indifferent to and I am one of them. it’s set up that later on in the show Ziggler will face Sin Cara.

Aiden English comes in the ring singing and dubbing himself the “Maestro of Mayhem” before Tye Dillinger interrupts. A squash match happens next, after about a minute Tye wins via pinfall. Aiden English breaks down crying.

Renee Young comes up to Jericho to interview him, but Aiden’s bloodclot crying interrupts. Jericho drops some hilarious lines about “there’s no crying on SmackDown” before putting him and Renee on the List of Jericho.

The “Welcoming Committee” of Carmella, Tamina, and Natalya beat up Charlotte Flair enough so the tag match becomes a handicap.

It’s assumed that Naomi doesn’t know what happened to Charlotte so she does well against Carmella and Nattie until the numbers become too much, halfway into the match out comes Flair walking to ring selling the beating. Once she’s tagged in her, adrenaline kicks in crowd pops. A few Hart vs Flair chain wrestling but due to a roll-up pin the team of Carmella and Nattie defeat Naomi and Charlotte.

A post match brawl occurs Becky Lynch comes out and teases a turn before pushing the Ellsworth. The heels stand tall over the baby faces. The match itself was about twelve minutes.

My favorite match of the night was the next one Dolph Ziggler vs Sin Cara. I believe that this is a new Sin Cara using OG Sin Cara moveset because the second Sin Cara wasn’t as fluid as the Sin Cara tonight. It’s possible it’s TJP under the mask who when he was in TNA was one of the many to be the masked man Suicide. Ziggler wins via pinfall with a terrible superkick after around five minutes.

The funniest part of the night was this Dick Wolf/ Law&Order-esque video package for Breezango called “The Fashion Files” they called the Usos the “Uggos”, then listed their crimes including “jaywalking” and “jimmywalking” too. Tons of Easter eggs in it my favorite was a picture of a Vince McMahon mugshot.

The main event was arguably better than the match two nights before. AJ Styles was banned from Ringside. Back and forth with crazy near falls. Jericho and Owens are two of the best storytellers in the squared circle to tell the story they told in almost thirteen minutes. After a devastating pop-up powerbomb Kevin Owens wins via pinfall and once again becomes the United States Champion.

After the match Kevin Owens deliverers another pop-up powerbomb and just destroys Jericho. To top off the destruction of Jericho, Owens using a steel chair with Jericho head in it he launched it into one of the LED turnbuckles. SmackDown ended with Jericho screaming in agony.

Is this the last of Jericho?

Who is the real “Face” of SmackDown?

When will Naomi and Charlotte have a match without interference?

What’s the next note for the Maestro of Mayhem?

How will Randy retaliate against Jinder?

Can Sami beat Corbin?

Will Sin Cara become more important?

Find out next week on SmackDown.
