This movie was the definition of “meh”. It has some great visuals and score but the character and story is so dumbed down that it barely resembles the complexity of the original film. It’s like they spoon fed the audience because they felt like we couldn’t handle the original plot. The plot was basically an amnesia trope and if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen it all. It felt like the director tried to direct two different movies. It’s like he wanted to remake the original film and add his own spin but what he added didn’t make any sense and you’re left wondering why it’s there.
Regarding the characters, Section 9 are sadly wasted, we never really get to know anyone other than Chief Aramaki and Batou but the rest get maybe a line, some even just show up out of nowhere. Michael Pitt was just there in my opinion and Scarlett did an ok job as The Major but it needed more than that to save this film. Also don’t get me started on the white-washing aspect of the film, it would’ve made sense if it’s source material wasn’t based in Japan. Just seemed like a poor excuse to sell tickets using an well-known actor and a popular brand. Overall, if you want a visual exercise with no substance then this film is right up your alley. If not then I would wait until it’s on a premium channel so you can use it as a screen saver for your 4K TV.
