Chris Rock had the wonderful task of being chosen to be the host of the 88th Oscars award ceremony. An award where it is an actor’s dream to win and be recognized amongst their peers. The man whose comedy is primarily about racial issues. This year though this particular award ceremony was surrounded by controversy. No! Controversy in Hollywood? Tell me more! Alright I will!
Jada Pinkett Smith who is Will Smith’s wife raising the alarm that there isn’t enough diversity within the Oscars and that she and her husband would boycott this years ceremony. This carried on steam within the black community because what she was saying was true. There wasn’t a true depiction of today’s society on the movie screen. Up pops up #oscarssowhite hashtag. Prominent figures in the African American community were boycotting the Oscars because they want diversity.
Cheryl Boone Isaacs who is the president of the Academy addressed this issue head on about diversity within the board who nominates the nominees. She has heard the public outrage of this issue and spoke on it at the Oscars.
The issue about the lack of diversity in Hollywood is as troubling as seeing only one color in your box of Fruit Loops, this isn’t Cheerios. There should be a greater mix of ethnicities in films today. My co host JC brought up a point about why does the African American culture have their own awards… Well because they aren’t getting the respect they deserve else where so they made up their own.
Chris Rock whether it was him selling Girl Scout cookies to the audience or bringing Stacy Dash to the stage he had to disrupt the Oscars. There was definitely some awkward moments and some thought provoking ones as well.
For me personally I think Chris did all he could do without losing his job. He tried to address the issue head on and he even told the audience to come to the BET awards in the summer at the end of the night even said #blacklivesmatter. He has his own issues he’s facing in Hollywood himself. He’s gotta earn a living as well. I just hope now we all get the message.
